My Top 15 Upcoming Games for the PS4 and Xbox One
With the Sony Playstation 4 and Microsoft Xbox One just around the corner, all the game developers around the world are fighting tooth and claw over which game will be the best of them all. The exclusive games could very well make or break the fate of their corresponding consoles, but both have very promising titles that’ll make you overlook all those pointless debates and just want to play them all.
To hell with the console wars- we should be talking more about the games themselves. I’ll be saving up for the PlayStation 4, no doubt, but I dare not to underestimate the capabilities of the Xbox One- its exclusives are just as iconic as the PS4-only titles. I’m not really worrisome about the Xbox One exclusives, though, because my big bro would probably get both just like how he got the PS3 and Xbox 360.
Among the long list of upcoming games for both consoles, here are my top 15:
1.) Final Fantasy XV
Platform: PS4, Xbox One
The only crystal left to the world lies in the Kingdom of Lucis. Upon striking a peace with the garrison state of Niflheim, Lucis rejoices in having at last brought the cold war to a close. Their celebrations, however, are premature. Under the guise of amity, Niflheim dispels the anti-armament runewall and launches a full-scale invasion of the kingdom. The peaceful lives Crown Prince Noctis and his entourage once knew are consumed by the flames of war as they struggle to mount a resistance.
2.) Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn
Platform: PS4, Xbox One
An upcoming massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) that takes place in the fictional land of Eorzea, five years after the events of the original release. At the conclusion of Final Fantasy XIV, the primal dragon Bahamut escapes from its prison inside an artificial moon to initiate the Seventh Umbral Era, an apocalyptic event which destroys much of Eorzea. Through the gods’ blessing, the player character escapes the devastation by time traveling five years into the future. As Eorzea recovers and rebuilds, the player must deal with the impending threat of invasion by the Garlean Empire from the north.
3.) Metal Gear V: The Phantom Pain
Platform: PS4, Xbox One
The prologue chapter takes place shortly after the events of Peace Walker in 1975. Big Boss “Punished Snake” is working on behalf of the Militaires Sans Frontières. Following orders from Kazuhira Miller, he is sent to infiltrate an American black site on Cuban soil called Camp Omega. The prologue ends with destruction of Mother Base, MSF’s base of operations, and Snake falls comatose as a result of injuries he has sustained.
In the main story set in 1984, Snake finally awakens from his coma and forms a new mercenary group, the Diamond Dogs. Now using the name Punished Snake, he ventures into Afghanistan during the Soviet war to track down the men responsible for MSF’s destruction.
4.) Kingdom Hearts 3
Platform: PS4, Xbox One
Sora will once again be the protagonist of the game. The game will also see the return of Riku, Donald Duck, Goofy, and King Mickey, as well as the inclusion of familiar Disney characters. Continuing from Dream Drop Distance, Sora, Donald and Goofy will attempt to search for seven guardians of light and the “Key to Return Hearts”, while King Mickey and Riku search for previous Keyblade wielders, in an attempt to stop Master Xehanort’s plan to balance the light and darkness, which will ultimately lead to the final showdown between Sora and Master Xehanort. The game will feature new and familiar worlds based on Disney properties, and will serve as the final chapter of the “Dark Seeker” saga.
5.) Mirror’s Edge 2
Platform: PS4, Xbox One
Mirror’s Edge 2 is the upcoming second installment to the Mirror’s Edge series. The game is currently being developed by EA Digital Illusions CE and will be published by Electronic Arts somewhere in 2014. The game is set before the events of the Mirror’s Edge, revolving around Faith’s beginnings.
6.) Quantum Break
Platform: Xbox One
Quantum Break is set in the fictional North Eastern U.S. Riverport University where a time travel experiment has gone wrong, giving the three main characters, Jack Joyce, Beth Wilder, and Paul Serene the ability to manipulate time. Paul Serene, for example, can see into the future to decide which choices to make in the present.
7.) Watch Dogs
Platform: PS4, Xbox One
The story is built around the concept of information warfare, data being interconnected, and the world’s increasing use of technology—questioning who exactly runs the computers they depend on. The game is set in an alternate reality version of Chicago, Illinois, which is one of many cities to feature a supercomputer known as a “CtOS” (Central Operating System).
The system controls almost every piece of technology in the city, and contains information on all of the city’s residents and activities which can be used for various purposes. The game will follow an antihero named Aiden Pearce, a highly skilled hacker described as a person who uses both “fists and wits.”
8.) Halo 5
Platform: Xbox One
At E3 2013, Microsoft announced a new, currently untitled addition to the Halo series, although the trailer appears to depict a post-Halo 4 Master Chief. This new Halo is confirmed to be only on the Xbox One, and claimed to run at 60 FPS. After E3, Microsoft CEO Phil Spencer said that the “Reclaimer Trilogy” had been expanded into a longer series of games, saying they “didn’t want to limit the Reclaimer story within a trilogy”. Spencer also clarified in an interview with IGN that while the next-gen game was not Halo 5, it was a “legitimate” entry in the game series rather than a spin-off.
9.) Blacklight Retribution
Platform: PS4
The game takes place in a science-fiction setting and a possesses a number of game types and maps. The game appears currently to have no single player other than training and practice mode and the game types are: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Domination, King of the Hill and Kill Confirmed. Siege Mode, where one team advances a Scorpion Tank through checkpoints into enemy territory, was added in August 2012. In March 2013, Onslaught mode was added, in which players collect tokens to gain XP and GP.
It also features the Hyper Reality Visor or HRV which allows the player to locate enemies, mines, weapon depots and Hardsuit weak points through walls and other obstacles for a very short amount of time. In HRV, the player is only able to move around, jump, and sprint, which may increase the chances of a HRV user being easily killed. HRV also has a very limited use and needs to recharge.
10.) Daylight
Platform: PS4, Xbox One
11.) The Order: 1886
Platform: PS4
The Order: 1886™ introduces players to a unique vision of Victorian-Era London where Man uses advanced technology to battle a powerful and ancient foe. As a member of an elite order of knights, join a centuries-old war that will determine the course of history forever.
12.) Call of Duty: Ghosts
Platform: PS4, Xbox One
Call of Duty: Ghosts takes place following a catastrophic event that changed the global balance of powers in the world. As a result, the United States is no longer recognized as a superpower. Ten years after the event, an unseen enemy emerges as a threat, but the remnants of US special operation forces from every branch came together to create an elite group of troops known as the “Ghosts”, who are determined to eradicate all threats to protect the weak and the remains of America.
13.) The Evil Within
Platform: PS4, Xbox One
While investigating the scene of a gruesome mass murder, Detective Sebastian Castellanos and his partners encounter a mysterious and powerful force. After seeing the slaughter of fellow officers, Sebastian is ambushed and knocked unconscious. When he awakens, he finds himself in a deranged world where hideous creatures wander among the dead. Facing unimaginable terror, and fighting for survival, Sebastian embarks on a frightening journey to unravel what’s behind this evil force.
14.) Dying Light
Platform: PS4, Xbox One
Looking something like a zombie-infected Mirror’s Edge, the FPS survival horror game will balance free-running mechanics with weapons for players to defend themselves with against “the infected population.”
Set in a vast open world, the player will be able to roam free during the day, finding supplies, crafting and fixing weapons and exploring the urban environments. As the sun sets though, the player will have to protect themselves from the increasingly angry and vicious infected. During the night, the player becomes the hunted and must “use everything in their power to survive until the morning’s light.”
15.) Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag
Platform: PS4, Xbox One
As is the case in previous games in the Assassin’s Creed series, the story is divided into two intertwined halves, with one in the present day, one in a historical setting, and the events of each influencing the other. The player’s character is hired by Abstergo Entertainment — a subsidiary of Abstergo Industries — to investigate a pivotal movement in Desmond’s ancestry; the Assassin Edward Kenway. A notorious pirate and privateer operating during the Golden Age of Piracy, Kenway’s story is set in the Caribbean, and mixes open-ended ship-based exploration with combat and land-based adventures on a number of Caribbean islands.
