Click here for my ‘Why Jailbreak Your Apple Device‘ post to weigh the pros and cons.
Have you decided? Just making things clear: I’m not advocating the idea of jailbreaking your device here, as it is clearly not advised in the eyes of Apple. In the end, it will be of your own choice and of your own responsibility. Please do more research if you are still unsure as I will not be accountable should things go out of control. I’ll show you how the best I can, and let you yourself try maximizing the usage of your gadget via Cydia.
Useful tip: A lot of people go to techno-shops to get their device jailbroken for a price when in fact, they could have done it by themselves in less than five minutes, with just a few clicks here and there at that!
Apps, apps, and more apps!
Let’s get to business. How to jailbreak your Apple device:
1.) Download the jailbreak software in line with your type of device and iOS version. There are plenty out there, but I’ve found ease of use with Absinthe. For the iPhone (3GS, 4, 4 CDMA, 4S), iPad (1, 2, 3 all wifi, global, CDMA, GSM), iPod (3G, 4G) and AppleTV 2 running on iOS 5.1.1, download the jailbreak software here (Windows / Mac / Linux). If you’re not sure, check your device and search for the corresponding software at http://absinthejailbreak.org.
2.) Unzip, extract and run the Absinthe application.
3.) Connect your device via USB (make sure to remove any passcodes or VPN settings)
4.) Click “Jailbreak” button to start untethered jailbreak to your device
5.) After a few minutes, the process would have finished. You can confirm it by the new Cydia app on your screen
Congtatulations! Your device has been successfully jailbroken :)
So Cydia- what is it? It’s basically the one single app that all jailbreak software out there install to our devices. You can say it’s the gateway to all the third-party apps and utilities we’ll be installing after the jailbreak. With Cydia, you can now install said apps and utilities on my ‘Why Jailbreak Your Apple Device‘ post, though some of them would cost a little.
Now, moving on to getting FREE full version paid apps- you’ll need Installous for that. Here’s how:
1.) Go to Cydia > Sources > Edit > Add and punch in http://cydia.hackulo.us
2.) After the download completes, return to the Cydia screen
3.) Select Hackulo.us from the Sources menu
4.) Scroll down and install Installous
5.) Run Installous, and get your happily hacked apps
So there you have it! I hope you enjoy this tutorial and if you happen to have any concerns, comments or questions, feel free to write in the comment section below. Happy jailbreaking! ;)
